The Galloping Ghost
"Crossing the Equator"
During its first deployment to the South Pacific, a round trip aircraft
ferry run, the Marcus Island crossed over the equator. To commemorate
the event the publication at the right was printed that day, the 27th
of May, 1944.
In keeping with long standing tradition, the crew celebrated the occasion
in an appropriate manner. Pollywogs graduated to the status of
Shellbacks following a proper initiation, thereby receiving their membership
in the "Ancient Order of the Deep."
The booklet is from the estate of Edwin G. Osborn who was aboard the
"Galloping Ghost" at the time. He was an ARM2/c and flew aboard SB2Cs
and TBMs. I am still trying to verify what unit he was with. It could
have been CASU-7 or possibly STAG-1. If anyone knows, let me know.
